Sioux-Miami, The Last Time

So, just because I can't pick games nearly as well as Greg Amsinger can doesn't mean I can't borrow his other gimmicks...like putting humorous captions underneath action photos.

"Hey Phil, nice job, but do you have to be so darn good? How am I supposed to win the Hobey?"

OK, I should probably stick to commentary...

Nice Things About Miami

OK, so it didn't exactly take Nostredamus to predict that Miami would be the new No. 1 in the polls today, but it beats feeling like NostreDUMBus, as I did after trying to pick the first weekend's games.

Of course, I couldn't have predicted before the season that I'd be complaining if Miami made it to the top of the polls.

And I did, just a little.

Sioux What?

What an interesting time to be a North Dakota fan.

Stuff's happening on the ice, stuff's happening off the ice...there's certainly no loss for what to talk about in Grand Forks.

Videos And Final Reflections on My Run With The Dogs

All apologies, by the way, to the awesome Minnesota Duluth blog "Running With The Dogs", for ripping off that name for this blog post, but after that much drive time, I think I earned it.

I'm actually in Rockford, Illinois right now, visiting a friend, and as such, did not attend the second game of tonight's series between the Wolverines and the Terriers. From the looks of it, though, I didn't miss much, as the Wolverines cruised to a 6-2 victory.

What I did miss, until now, is the opportunity to show you folks the rest of the video from our trip.

We Made It

We've finally arrived at our destination, after 18 hours on the road. It was a fun trip, to be sure, but we didn't go without our share of bumps in the road.

I'll detail those bumps for you before you get set to turn on CSTV and click over to Power Plays for all the game action...

O! H! I! O!

The journey continues, long past the sunrise (seen through the back of the car as we drive west), as we've left the state of New York, made our way through a bit of Pennsylvania, and are now in Ohio on I-90 heading toward Toledo.

On The Road: Not-Exactly-Frozen Ponds

Greetings from the Junius Ponds Service Area in western New York, everyone.

So far, so good on the road to Ann Arbor. We're making good progress, and while my road buddies enjoy some coffee and donuts from this rest stop, here's an update on what's going on so far.

On the Road Again

You know, we're a couple of weeks into the season, and there've been some great games, but still, I can't shake the feeling that things have been a little too quiet around here lately...

It's time for that to change.

An Extra Angle

So Boston College and Merrimack moved their game from Saturday night to Sunday, thanks to a baseball game of some importance to be played on Saturday evening.

Given that the Red Sox are, by extension, New England's team - being at Dartmouth during the 2003 ALCS was a great education on this point - what do you suppose this'll do to this weekend's big UNH-Colorado College series?

So much for there not being much of a rivalry there...

On Second Thought...

Well, you can't say the first two weekends of the season haven't given us what to think about.

Personally, based on what we've seen so far this month, I'm definitely rethinking a few things.

Get The Fog Out

I'm getting ready to head out to Boston in the hour for tonight's Boston College-North Dakota game, and I just got some very good news.

It seems that the fine folks at BC are doing what they need to do to ensure that we get a full 60 minutes of hockey tonight.

Bust Some Heads?

If you take a look at my weekly column - on how the growing youth of college hockey's top teams affects early non-conference games, and the NCAA tournament selection process as well - you'll note some choice comments from Maine head coach Tim Whitehead.

As it turned out, Whitehead had quite a lot to say on the subject of non-conference competition.

Surfing The Nets

It's a minor flaw of mine as a writer that I put entirely too much stock in what certain individual fan bases think of me, specifically those that think I have it in for their team because I say not-entirely-complimentary things about their teams, and/or their goalies.

So, since the only goalie I wrote about on Monday was Minnesota's Jeff Frazee, here are a few other thoughts on the men between the pipes.

A Select Few

USA Hockey released its Women's Select Team roster for the Four Nations Cup today, and there are 13 current collegians who will be leaving their teams to compete in Sweden next month. Looking at it, I can't help but realize how much the game has changed.

Funny Business

So let me get this straight: Boston College plays Michigan on Friday, and Brock Bradford's out until around Beanpot time with a broken humerus. Then, Minnesota plays Michigan on Saturday, and Ryan Stoa's done for the year with a knee injury.

Guys, I know it's tough to replace the physical presence of a Jack Johnson, but that's not how you do it.

OK, OK, settle down Michigan fans. I kid, I kid...

Better Off Picking My Nose...

...than picking hockey games.

If Michigan Tech beats Lake Superior today, I'll be an even 16-16 for the weekend.

Awful, absolutely awful.

Greg, I don't know how you do it, man.

May as well look at the weekend overall, take a look at the big surprises.

Live In St. Paul...But Not Here

Well, I did pretty miserably yesterday picking games - it fit the rest of my day quite nicely, I must say - so I'm glad to be back in the business of reporting from them. However, it won't be here on the Rink Rat blog.

I'm in St. Paul at the Xcel Energy Center, and I'm breaking in CSTV.com's new live scoring blog, Power Plays. As the 2007-08 season gets rolling, CSTV.com will be live from some of the biggest games across the country. For today, though, it's me all by my lonesome at the Ice Breaker. So pop on over and check it out, why don't you?

Enjoy the games!

Being Like Greg

I should be in St. Paul right now.

I'm not.

It's a long story.

But it's time for the season to start, and if I can't be at the Ice Breaker tonight - I will be there tomorrow, however - then I'm going to do something I've never done on this blog before.

I'm going to rip off - actually, let's make that "borrow" - Greg Amsinger's gimmick.

This Is It

We're under 24 hours, folks.

By this time tomorrow, the 2007-08 college hockey season will be in full swing. There's a great opening weekend of action, and I cannot wait to get started.

Welcome to the Party

Well, I'm glad that wasn't the first game of the 2007-08 season.

In case you hadn't noticed, RPI gave Bentley a good, sound thumping on Tuesday night, getting a 4-0 win over the Falcons in front of 3,429 fans at Houston Field House.

Not that it's got the feel of a true season opener, but if you were going into a tournament with Michigan, Boston College and Minnesota, wouldn't you want a tune-up game too?

Polls, Schmolls

One men's hockey game has been played in the 2007-08 season.

One.

One that counts, anyway.

So how on earth can a poll change so much?

And They're Off!

The wait is over...sort of.

Yes, if your favorite team is more than 20 miles from the Canadian border, you're still waiting for the season to begin.

However, there is a real, meaningful Division I men's college hockey game in the books. St. Lawrence is 1-0, Clarkson is 0-1, and we have some stuff to talk about.

Something To Talk About

Tick tock, tick tock...the first game is only a few days away, and the CSTV.com Season Preview is in full swing. We've just done our ECAC Hockey Preview, and you can read all about St. Lawrence, Clarkson, Quinnipiac, and Colgate goaltender Mark Dekanich, and check out the photo gallery wherein your humble correspondent makes his preseason predictions.

Speaking of preseason predictions, the polls are out...
