It's Not Easy, Bowling Green

By Elliot Olshansky - January 19, 2008

Greetings from Findlay, Ohio, where I've stopped for lunch on my way back to Columbus from last night's Bowling Green-Western Michigan game.

It was my second visit of the season to BGSU Ice Arena, and while my general comments on arenas, fans and bands have tapered off since I haven't been to many new places this season, Bowling Green is new to me this month, and after a pair of visits, I think I'd ought to contribute a few thoughts.

First of all, the BGSU Ice Arena may not be a sparkling, ultra-modern facility, but I like it. So far as I can tell, there isn't a bad seat in the house. The press box is well located, and I also love how it's set up for the goal judges to be behind the nets without obstructing fan views. Having both teams enter and exit the ice through the same door can probably be a bit uncomfortable when things get testy - as they did last night - but that's really a minor thing.

The fans are nice and loud, althought they can't seem to decide between the two schools of thought about the reaction to the end of an opponent's penalty kill. Instead, they combine the two, and announcements of the opposition returning to full strength are answered with, "That's debatable, THEY STILL SUCK!"

Speaking of penalties, the Falcons may hold the distinction of having the most sound cues for an opposing penalty of any team in college hockey. When an opponent heads to the box, the PA plays some combination of "Bad Boys," the Imperial March from Star Wars and Alice in Chains' "Man In the Box," followed by the "you just lost" sound from "Let's Make A Deal" (at least, that's what it sounds like).

The best music, though, comes from the BGSU band. The electric bass and drum set is an interesting choice, but it works, and the band's arrangement of Bon Jovi's "Have a Nice Day" is an easy Ratty Nominee for Best Original Pep Band Arrangement.

Oh, and while I've previously said that BGSU has the ugliest mascots I've ever seen, the mascots' orange sneakers with the white Falcon silhouette on them are great.

OK, it's time for me to get going back toward Columbus. It's a day of champions, with defending NCAA women's champ Wisconsin and men's champ Michigan State both in town to take on the Buckeyes. Be sure to check out all the action at Power Plays.
