Things I Find Funny

By Elliot Olshansky - January 26, 2008

Under normal circumstances, I try to sprinkle my smartass remarks throughout my commentary, as I've found that my sense of humor is best taken in small doses (very small doses, if you listen to some of my colleagues).

However, a few recent developments have amused me to the point where I have a number of observations to share with you.

- You know that still-lingering "controversy" concerning Denver's "retirement" of mascot Denver Boone? Well, those in favor of his return may have some ammunition they don't know about. Now, admittedly, I didn't know about him until I visited the Milford Ice Pavilion on Friday, but the Sacred Heart Pioneers have a relatively new (less than a year old) mascot called Big Red, who doesn't look any more or less offensive than Denver Boone. Someone alert Peter Mannino, stat! Then again, maybe he'd better focus on keeping pucks out of the net...it's been a bit of an issue lately.

- Hey, remember when the folks at the St. Pete Times Forum decided to use two of the four sides of their center-hung video board - aka "LightningVision" - to show that supposed once-in-a-lifetime event, as the New England Patriots went for an undefeated season against the New York Giants? Oops. Better make that twice in a lifetime.

- Speaking of which, which Hockey East ref has the misfortune of being assigned to the Vermont-UMass Lowell game on Super Bowl Sunday? Anyone want to take a guess as to how many penalties are called in that 4 p.m. game?

- With a win at St. Lawrence on Friday, Union is now 11-8-3 on the season. Anyone else wondering how "proud" former president Roger Hull is now?

- It was funny when Michigan State's Jeff Lerg and Miami's Jeff Zatkoff - having both gone the entire first half without a shutout despite great team success - got their first shutouts of the season on the same night. Now, they've both got two in a row. Personally, Lerg gets some degree of difficulty points for getting No. 2 against the No. 1 team in the nation, but then again, blanking Alaska all the way out in Fairbanks isn't exactly a walk in the park. But I digress. Two Jeffs, two teams, two two-game shutout streaks...what are the odds?

For now, that is all...
