Big 12: Shaky Start

SAN ANTONIO - Baylor can't seem to catch a break - even their flight to San Antonio had trouble taking off.

If head coach Guy Morriss' opening remark does not foreshadow the Bears' upcoming season, it certainly describes the past one:

"I wasn't sure if the plane was going to get off the ground or not," the soft-spoken coach said to begin the last set of remarks on the first of three Big 12 Conference media days.

Since joining the Big 12, Baylor has never won more than three conference games in a season. With five new assistant coaches on staff, Morriss is hoping to do something about a running game that was dead last in the nation last year and a 4-2-5 defense that surrendered more than 32 points per game.

Morriss was clearly frustrated with his team's past results, but was quick to defend the offensive system he put in place last year.

"All the running that we're doing doesn't amount to a hill of beans if you don't take it to the field," Morriss said. "We've got to have some success between the white lines this year. I believe our kids believe they can win, we have to find out how deep does that belief go."
