Big 12: Sooners' QB Decision to Come Later

SAN ANTONIO - Big 12 Media Days are under way at the St. Anthony hotel in downtown San Antonio, Texas, where hoards of national and local media have crammed into a crowded ballroom to speak with representatives from each of the conference's 12 schools. Bob Stoops and defending conference champions Oklahoma started off the three-day event by addressing the big question on everyone's mind - who will start under center for the Sooners.

"We don’t have a time table," the head coach was quick to explain. "That position needs to be earned. We’ve had four different quarterbacks win four different Big 12 Championships, so this is nothing new for us."

Stoops sounded a few quick accolades for each of the three inexperienced candidates - Sam Bradford, Joey Halzle and Keith Nichol - but maintained that a decision would not necessarily be made in the near future.

"We believe that position needs to have the confidence of the team, the respect of the team in the huddle, in the locker room, and you only get that through your time on the field. Whoever earns the respect of the team the most, eventually we’ll say it’s time to make that decision."

Some good news for the young candidates, pointed out by tight end Joe Jon Finley: with the Sooners' offensive line averaging 6-5, 316 pounds, whoever ends up in the pocket will have plenty of time to make plays.
