The Vegas Scene

LAS VEGAS - The votes are in, and Mountain West Conference media members picked TCU to capture the conference title this year. Several people believe TCU can be this year’s Boise State and reach a BCS game. MWC member Utah was the first non-BCS conference team to crash the BCS bowl party in 2004.

You go to Hollywood to see the stars, and apparently you go to the McCarran International Aiport in Las Vegas to see the athletes.
Spotted while I was walking through the terminal at 7 a.m.:
- Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry, who was waiting for his flight to Arizona.
- Recent Chicago Bulls draft pick and former Florida Gator Joakim Noah, who
On my flight from Salt Lake to Vegas:
- Daniel Summerhays. The former BYU golfer was on his way to play in his first official golf event as a professional in Omaha, Neb. Summerhays, who recently became the first amateur to win a Nationwide Tour event, will be participating in the Cox Classic.
The athletic scene around Las Vegas is buzzing this week.
Not only is the MWC holding its football media days, but the United States men’s basketball team is practicing here, and the shoe companies (Nike, Reebok, Adidas) are holding their annual AAU tournaments.
Nearly every top-flight high school basketball player and every college coach in the nation are in Vegas for the recruiting bonanza while NBA players like Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd and Chauncey Billups are holding court at UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center.
