Beavs win going away
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- I think MIke Riley's refusing to shave until he picks a quarterback.
I'm just guessing though.
Riley says there's no clear-cut choice after tonight's 24-7 win over Utah at Reser Stadium. Canfield started the second half, but Moevao got some good playing time, too. Canfield went 8-19 with 87 yards and one TD and Moevao went 3-9 with 32 yards. Each one had a pick, too. One thing to keep in mind with Moevao's lack of passing is that when he was in the Beavers were mostly handing the ball to Bernard, who racked up 165 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns.
The OSU defense was great tonight, even if corner Brandon Hughes said, "We made a lot of mistakes." The Utes had just 18 rushing yards ... OSU had 241. (Once again, keep in mind that two of Utah's top players went out.)
OSU got good minutes out of two freshmen, Darrell Catchings (who scored one TD) and James Rodgers. Riley said "those are two unassuming guys who are going to grow a lot in our program." There's no doubt that should Sammie Stroughter stay away, Catchings' play could be a key factor.
Player of the Game: No doubt, it was all Bernard. Riley said he thought giving the ball to Bernard settled down his QBs (who were obviously a little nervous at the start) and the running back didn't disappoint. He's a little beat up, but this is why Riley keeps Bernard out of scrimmages. "He doesn't need to practice being tackled," said Riley with a laugh.
Play of the Game: This goes to Bernard, but it's a tie for which play: It's either the snazzy one-handed grab he made late in the third quarter when he was balancing off foot or it was his 54-yard run early in the second. Now the 54-yarder was impressive for a couple reasons. First, before that play, Bernard had rushed just 55 yards. So in one play, he managed to double that. Second, he made a sweet little spin to get away from the defense before pushing off three defenders and breaking through the right side. Both plays made the crowd go "Ooooh."
Next up: The Beavs travel to Cincinnati next Thursday to take on a Bearcat team that thumped Southeast Missouri State 59-3 and the Utes open at home against Air Force Saturday.
