Well Grounded

With a first-time starter under center against the pick-happy Hokie defense, it would appear that Skip Holtz is looking to limit the opportunities to Virginia Tech to add to its best-in-the-nation interception total since 2000.1

With 4:30 gone in the game, the Pirates offense has had two drives (thanks to a first-play interception by Sean Glennon on the lone Hokies possession), and ECU went three-and-out on both. The six plays consisted of four runs and two passes, one of those a screen pass. It would have been two screen passes if not for a delay-of-game on the Pirates, and even then, Brett Clay threw it short rather than go for the first down in the air and test the Hokies' secondary.

I'm not sure how well the Pirates will fare against the No. 9 team in the nation playing so conservatively, but then, they might not stand much better a chance going the other way. We'll see how that develops as the game goes along.
