Bad news for the kickers

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Wisconsin's Taylor Mehlhaff missed a 38-yard Field Goal, and Illinois's Anthony Santella shanked a punt for just 14 yards.

Despite moving the ball effectively into Illinois territory, Wisconsin came up short on another third down conversion. Wisconsin QB Tyler Donovan passed for 43 yards on the drive, which was aided by a 15-yard late hit penalty on Illinois's Sirod Williams. On 3rd down on the Illini 21, Linebacker Martez Wilson pressured Donovan into an errant throw to force a field goal attempt. Badgers kicker Taylor Mehlhaff botched the 38-yard kick wide left, rendering the drive moot.

On the ensuing drive for Rashard Mendenhall broke a stretch play for 22 yards, but the Illini didn't do much else before punting. Punter Anthony Santella dropped it on the side of his foot, and the kick went a paltry 14 yards.

As the quarter ends, Wisconsin is driving into Illinois territory, but they face another crucial third down conversion on the Illinois 33 once the teams switch sides.

15 minutes gone: 7-0 Illini.
