Boston College Avoids Jinx of BCS #2, Wins 14-10

BLACKSBURG, Va – For 56 minutes of the game between Boston College and Virginia Tech Matt Ryan looked less than Heisman worthy.  But with 4:16 on the game clock and his team down 10 points he engineered two touchdown drives to steal a victory from the Hokies in Lane Stadium.

Tech took the lead in the second quarter on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Sean Glennon to Eddie Royal.  The Hokies added a field goal in the third to stretch the lead to 10.

The game looked all but locked up in the fourth quarter when Tech’s D.J. Parker picked off Ryan with six minutes left to play.  But the Eagles would not go away and on their next possession Ryan drove his team 92 yards for the score.

The onsides kick attempt by Boston College caromed off the chest of Hokie split end Josh Morgan and was recovered by BC’s Tyronne Pruitt.  Ryan went back to work hitting four different receivers while charging 66 yards in two minutes.  Virginia Tech did a good job of covering the receivers on both drives but Ryan found ways to buy himself time in those final minutes.  His 24-yard pass to Andre Callender with 11 seconds on the clock sealed the comeback.

The no. 2 ranking in the poll had been unlucky recently with teams holding that spot falling in each of the past three weeks, but the Eagles pull one out and keep their shot at a BCS title game alive.

Play of the Game: The onsides kick.  The Boston College run defense gave up over twice its average on the night and had Virginia Tech been able to secure that kickoff, the Eagles might not have been able to get the ball back with enough time to make their final run.

Player of the Game: Matt Ryan. He went 25 of 52 passing for 285 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.  On their own those numbers don’t look very Heisman-esque, but in the final four minutes he went 9 of 15 for 158 yards and two touchdowns.  He belongs in the conversation.
