Faked Out

PISCATAWAY, NJ - It appeared as though the USF defense would bend, but not break on Rutgers' first drive of the game after the Scarlet Knights failed to convert a 3rd down and 8 from the USF 49. But then Rutgers pulled an LSU.

As Rutgers lined up to punt, Bulls head coach Jim Leavitt was shown on the stadium monitors pointing to both eyes as if to say "watch for the fake." The snap to punter Jeremy Ito was a bit too high for a normal punt, but was perfectly placed for him to make a throw, which he did, connecting with wide receiver James Townsend deep downfield on a perfectly executed fake punt to set up a first down from the USF 13.

On third and goal from the 2, Rutgers sent in backup quarterback Jabu Lovelace, who was chased by the USF defense out of bounds after a six-yard loss. Not sure what Rutgers coach Greg Schiano was thinking on that one, but at least we weren't looking at another Cal situation.

Ito's ensuing 26-yard field goal was good, making him one of the leading offensive players so far in this one. Rutgers takes an early 3-0 lead with 10:08 remaining in the first.

USF defensive end George Selvie was injured on one of the goal-line defense plays, but walked off on his own power. More details on him as they are available.
