Inauspicious Beginning

PISCATAWAY, NJ - USF's first play from scrimmage was not a pretty one. Quarterback Matt Grothe lined up in the shotgun, snapped his foot, then moved up to audible to the line, then dropped down under center, then clearly not knowing what exactly he was supposed to do, took a timeout.

USF then got moving, sort of, driving down as far as the Rutgers 30 yard-line, where a USF run was stopped dead on 3rd and 2, bringing in Delbert Alvarado to attempt a 47-yard field goal. The kick was true, tying the game at 3.

Rutgers defense looks surprisingly sturdy so far, only giving up a few big plays and certainly holding up well against the run on third downs. Grothe has already demonstrated his excellent field vision, making a throw on the run for a 10-yard gain.

Something tells me these teams won't be content to trade field goals all night ...
