Pretender or contender

AMES, Iowa - The computers are not fond of Oklahoma, but people love the Sooners. The media, coaches and whoever it is that votes in the Harris poll all had the Sooners No. 4 entering Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium, the very place where, at the half, an Iowa State team that counts losses to Toledo, Northern Iowa and Kent State, leads OU 7-0.

The issue at hand is not the intermission message Bob Stoops has for his Sooners, whatever it might be. The issue is whatever it is that has made it necessarry. Do the Sooners lack focus? Are they that irresponsible with the ball? Are they simply not that good?

Everything is up for grabs when the second half begins.

If the statued woman that holds the scales of justice instead held the scales of Sooner football in her hands, on one side would be talent and on the other, perhaps, density.

Because those are the competing forces of Sooner football this season. Seemingly unreal possibilities up against some Keystone Cops routine Stoops, who once praised his team for the robotic perfection it went about its business, has got to be growing so tired of.

"We're not very smart right now."

He said it after Colorado.

He said it after Texas.

Not word for word, but he said it after Missouri.

Now, here he is in Ames, Iowa - AMES, IOWA! - losing 7-0 at the half.
