Bears had their chance

NORMAN, Okla. - This had to be Baylor strategy: make a big play, take an early lead and let panic set in. Well, maybe it almost happened that way.

Because after both teams traded punts to begin the game, Brandon Whittaker took a hand-off from quarterback Blake Szymanski and raced 57 yards down the left boundary, putting Baylor at the OU 3. Then, for some reason, the Bears decided to throw a fade.

That play can't ever be a first resort!

Well, the ball was right there ... for Sooner cornerback Reggie Smith, who picked it off in the far corner of the end zone.

So much for the game plan. On the other hand, bully for the Baylor defense, which forced yet another punt from the Sooners.

Six minutes to play in the first quarter: no score.
