I don't believe what I just saw

NORMAN, Okla. - Just as Oklahoma was taking control of the game Saturday night at Owen Field ... everybody was reminded why they watch these games, anyway.

Because the Sooners entered better than a five touchdown favorite. And leading 21-7, and in the midst of the kind of backbreaking drive that beats a team for good, OU looked like it was getting back on the script. Instead, facing fourth-and-2 from the 26, the Sooners went for it and came up a yard short when the offensive line Bob Stoops defended last week came up short again.

So, of course, you know what Baylor did.

Baylor had Blake Szymanski drop back to pass deep to Thomas White, who caught the ball in stride, delivered one stiff arm and broke one tackle on the way a to a 75-yard touchdown pass. The play gave the Bears more than 300 yards of first-half offense and brought them with in 21-14.

And with the kick, things appeared to go from bad to worse for OU as DeMarco Murray fumbled to get a hold of a squib kick before finally picking it up at the 9 ... only to zig and zag and zig and zag before finding a lane to the outside and returning the kick 91 yards for a touchdown. He almost walked the last 5 yards, he was so tired.

So that's how the half was finally reached with OU leading 28-14.

FIRST HALF NOTES

So much for that stellar Sooner defene that had put back-to-back fine performances together against Iowa State and Texas A&M. At the half, the Bears lead OU in yardage 307 to 283.

Jermaine Gresham did not score, but the Sooner tight end kept his big play-ness in check, catching one pass for 48 yards, the big play in a drive that led to a 1-yard touchdown run from Murray, who has three of OU's four touchdowns.

The last thing people think about when they think about Baylor is rushing offense. The Bears entered th averaging 68.1 yards per game on the ground. At the half, the Bears have 126 yards and Brandon Whittaker has 107. Murray has 54 on seven carries and 91 return yards.

Sam Bradford has connected on 10 of 14 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown with no picks.
