Iowa State looks to spoil Kansas' dream season

LAWRENCE, Kan. - This is the classic trap game scenario: Kansas enters the game at 10-0 and primed to move into the No. 2 spot in the BCS with a victory. Iowa State is 3-8 but has won two straight games after hanging with Missouri and Oklahoma the two weeks prior.

There's little doubt the Jayhawks are more talented than the Cyclones, but this contest could be closer than many people think if Kansas devotes too much mental energy to thinking ahead to next weekend's game against Missouri. If the Jayhawks stay grounded and take care of business this afternoon, next week's game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City could be the college football game of the year.

Kansas' offense has continued to roll in recent weeks as quarterback Todd Reesing has not thrown an interception in a school-record 179 pass attempts and Brandon McAnderson has rushed for more than 100 yards in each of the last three games. The defense has faced stern tests from Oklahoma State and Nebraska in its last two games but is still one of the Big 12 Conference's best.

Iowa State has played very well in recent weeks thanks to the emergence of running back Alexander Robinson. The 181-pound freshman took over as the Cyclones' feature back three games ago and has put up big numbers ever since. Today's game is quarterback Bret Meyer's last. The senior quarterback is third among active quarterbacks in total offense and has started 48 straight games. He has two very potent targets in wide receivers Todd Blythe and R.J. Sumrall, who have 50 receptions a piece.

The atmosphere is great here in Lawrence. It's about 65 degrees and sunny as kickoff nears and the sellout crowd is already loud. Traffic isn't usually a problem here on gameday, but the streets were gridlocked several hours before game time.
