Upset alert at halftime

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - OK, now we're officially on an upset alert, as Maryland has taken a 20-14 lead over No. 8 Boston College into halftime.

The Terrapins deserve to be winning, and it should probably be a bigger margin than six. They had that silly roughing the punter penalty, which led to a BC touchdown, and they had to settle for field goals twice inside the 10-yard line. The Terps had a 17-play, 72-yard drive that lasted 8:13 but could only muster three points out of it.

Boston College does not look good. Its run defense, which came into the game No. 1 in the nation, has been shaky. Its pass defense looks even worse, as Chris Turner has exploited the Eagles' secondary. Matt Ryan does not look like a Heisman Trophy candidate (whether he still is one is debatable), as he threw that one terrible interception and hasn't stood out like he has in past games.

With that said, the Eagles are still in this game and only trail by six. They definitely need to adjust on defense, as Maryland has no business scoring 20 first-half points with a third-string quarterback, backup running back and depleted offensive line.

For the Terps, they just need to continue what they're doing, minus the ill-advised penalties. Too many times Maryland gave Boston College second chances. If that continues to happen, Boston College will eventually capitalize.
