Wet and Wild

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Last week, Matt Ryan led Boston College to a stunning rain-soaked win in Blacksburg. This week, he'll need to fight through more heavy rain, high winds, and temps dropping into the 30s if he hopes to keep No. 2 BC's ACC and national championship hopes alive against Florida State.

And for the second straight week, BC lucks out and won't have to face its opponents speedy starting quarterback - last week it was Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor, this week FSU's Xavier Lee will be sitting out after being suspended for two games. That means the ball will be in the hands of on again off again starter Drew Weatherford, who has been inconsistent in the past - he completed 74.5 percent of his passes for 339 yards last week against Duke, but his two interceptions against BC last year were key in giving BC a 24-19 win.

There are no questions at quarterback for the Eagles. Matt Ryan sits at the top of many Heisman lists, and he'll have another national audience to help boost - or hurt - his bid. The Eagles defense has been the most underappreciated aspect of the No. 2 Eagles success this year and should be a big factor.

But the biggest factor in today's game will almost undoubtedly be the elements. The remnants of Hurricane Noel are battering Chestnut Hill right now, and are expected to produce rain and wind gusts up to 40 mph at least through half time and possibly the entire game.

Who will benefit from the weather will be the big question. Can Matt Ryan be effective in a downpour? How will FSU move the ball against the nation's second-ranked run defense? And can the typically morose Boston College fan base show up even in the rain now that the Red Sox are done?

Let the game begin.
