Insight into the Insight Bowl

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Even if one of the country's biggest new year parties wasn't sitting blocks away from Sun Devil Stadium, there would be plenty fireworks onhand for this evening's Insight Bowl between Indiana and Oklahoma State.

Both Indiana (7-5, 3-5 Big 10) and Oklahoma State (6-6, 4-4 Big 12) feature dynamic sophomore quarterbacks operating out of spread offenses. It's also worth mentioning the Insight Bowl has traditionally been far from a defensive slugfest. Just look at the final scores from the past five games:

2006: Texas Tech 44, Minnesota 41 OT

2005: Arizona State 45, Rutgers 40

2004: Oregon State 38, Notre Dame 21

2003: California 52, Virginia Tech 49

2002: Pittsburgh 38, Oregon State 13

Anything different today would be highly unusal.

Commanding the Cowboys' offense is Zac Robinson, who despite not beginning the season as the starting quarterback, has emerged into a vibrant playmaker. Often in Robinson's sight is senior wide receiver Adarius Bowman.

Bowman, who leads OSU with seven touchdown receptions, sat out the Cowboys' final two regular season games with a sprained right knee but is slated to play in his final collegiate.

Indiana's Kellen Lewis, Robinson's counterpart, has had a superb season, completing nearly 61 percent of his passes for 2,839 yards and 26 touchdowns. Lewis' target for 16 of those touchdowns has been 6-foot-7 junior wide receiver James Hardy.

What may prove to be the difference stands in OSU's backfield. Cowboy senior running back Dantrell Savage has ran for more than 1,100 yards this season, gathering eight touchdowns along the way.

Indiana, however, has the emotional motivation. The Hoosiers all season have been playing for former head coach Terry Hoeppner, who died in June of brain cancer. It was Hoeppner's mission to get Indiana to a bowl game, where it has not been since 1993.
