EL PASO, TX - In what was a close 18-14 game at halftime, the Oregon Ducks exploded for 28 third quarter points, en route to a 56-21 win over South Florida in the 74th version of the Brut Sun Bowl.
Freshman quarterback Justin Roper had a big game, connecting on 16 of his 29 pass attempts for 175 yards and four touchdowns.
Roper hit four different receivers for scores, Garren Strong for 7 yards, Jaison Williams for 14 yards, Ed Dickson for 15 yards and Jonathan Stewart for 8 yards.
Speaking of Stewart, the junior RB gained a Brut Sun Bowl record 251 yards on 21 carries, crushing the old record of 197 yards set in 1977 by LSU's Charles Alexander.
For his effort, Stewart was named the game's Most Valuable Player.
The Oregon defense forced five turnovers, including four interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.
The game started with both teams looking sloppy. When it was all said and done, both teams combined for a Sun Bowl record 21 penalties for 202 yards. The Ducks were penalized 13 times for 137 yards.
The Ducks outgained South Florida 534 to 327. Oregon was especially punishing on the ground, gaining 359 yards.
The 56 ponts scored by Oregon also set a new Sun Bowl record.
USF startig QB Matt Grothe finished 18 of 34 for 195 yards, a TD and two interceptions.
