PSU-A&M: A&M bears down, ties it up

SAN ANTONIO, TX -- A&M just finished an epic drive (well as epic as a FG drive can be) and tied the game on a 38-yard FG by Matt Szymanski.

With about four minutes left in the third, Penn State and A&M are deadlocked at 17.

Starting the second half, both teams tried to throw long and traded interceptions. A&M's pick backed them up at the two, and set the stage for their game-tying 18-play, 78-yard drive.

There were three enormous plays on the drive.

1. After catching a short pass at his own 15, Jorvorskie Lane was hit from behind by Maurice Evans. Lane coughed up the ball, but OL Travis Schneider covered it at the 20 to avoid Aggie disaster.

2. Facing a 4th-and-1 at their own 40, A&M took a huge risk. QB Stephen McGee play-faked, but absolutely no one in the boring jerseys bit. McGee ended up tossing the ball to TE Martellus Bennett about five yards behind the line of scrimmage. Bennett had two defenders between him and the first down marker, but used his speed and his 6'7" frame to stretch for the first down.

3. Facing a 3rd-and-7 at the PSU 38, McGee quickly read a blitz and hit Ervin Taylor on a quick slant for 14 yards.

The drive was the longest the Penn State defense has allowed all season, both in plays and yardage.

The heavily-maroon crowd is now roaring louder than they have all game as Penn State tries to answer.
