Big XII: Coale Not Scared to Aim High

By Jean Neuberger - October 18, 2006

A question was asked to OU's Sherri Coale about the fact that the Sooners are not afraid to talk about national title and Final Four hopes. Coale, for one, thinks that talking the talk goes in part with walking the walk.

"I believe that if you want something, you've got to think about it, write it down every day, practice that much more...you have to be able to do something each day about it, and I thiink that they should be able to express what they want to do with you guys (the media)," said Coale. "We want to win a national championship here. There are no bones about it."

Coale mentioned the recent parody in the women's game.

"Parody is greater now than ever," said Coale. "I know that sounds like coachspeak, but it's true. Baylor lifted the ceiling for everyone. They showed that good talent with a lot of hard work will pay off in the end. Maryland proved that last year with a very young team. There's at least 15 schools that have a very good shot of winning the national title, and there might be more that are added to that list as the season progresses."

As much as the Sooners believe this could be their year, Coale is committed to taking it one step at a time.

"We want to win the Big XII first," Coale said. "When you win the Big XII, you take a step towards winning that national title. That's where you start. Then we want to win a tournament title. We're excited to have the tournament in Oklahoma City," Coale said. "The people in Oklahoma really love their sports. Bricktown (district in OKC) does a great job with various sporting events, and the local people will come here in droves."

Given OU's average attendane of over 7,600 a game last year, one can't argue with that statement.
