Natural Disaster

A natural disaster.

That's what a hurricane is, and that's what the Hurricanes are.

The University of Miami is well-known for superior athletics, but lately the school located in gorgeous Coral Gables, Fla., has been subjected to some down-right disastrous circumstances.

The football team, the team players being introduced during Monday Night Football routinely call, "The U," recently suffered through one of the worst seasons in recent memory going 6-6 in the regular season--they did manage to win their bowl game, the MPC Computers Bowl--and having their coach, Larry Coker, get fired.

The men's basketball team is having a similarly bad season, going 9-10 thus far, including 2-3 in the ACC.

But the team struggling in south Florida most of all? The women's basketball team.

Katie Meier's Lady Hurricanes started the year at 7-1, including a solid victory over Indiana, but since have dropped nine of their last 11 games. Miami has also lost five in a row for a shaky 9-10 overall record, including 0-4, good enough for the cellar in the ACC.

And now, turmoil seems to be hitting the team.

What began the season as a 12-woman roster has--due to injuries and other reasons--dwindled down to just eight available players for the Hurricanes.

Center 6-foot-3 sophomore Brittany Denson did not play in Miami's last game, a 37-52 loss to Georgia Tech, and rumor has it that she is in the process of deciding whether or not she is going to transfer, leaving the squad with only one player above 6-foot-2.

If that isn't enough for the 'Canes, the same rumor has coach Meier threatening to cut every player on the team and continuing to compete with nothing but walk-ons if the energy and effort doesn't pick up.

Whether there is any validity to these rumors is still speculation, but there is one certainty, the Miami Hurricanes women's basketball program is not where it wants to be.

Right now the team is in the sort of disarray that has found many Florida cities after the last few years' natural disasters that spawn Miami's name.
