Real Life Hollywood Endings

By Jeff Lippman - February 16, 2007

Isn't it funny how life is sometimes?

You cannot script life, real life is far more imaginative than the human imagination could ever be.

When the N.C. State Wolfpack took the court against North Carolina Friday, they weren't expecting a victory. After all, UNC was ranked No. 2 and were favorites to return to the Final Four. State was just an above average ACC team.

The Pack had home court advantage, sure, but they had one other glaring advantage that runs much deeper than where the game is played.

North Carolina State is coached by an extraordinary person in Kay Yow. A two-time cancer survivor, Yow recently returned to the court to regain the leading role for a team on a mission to succeed for their coach.

Yow is a legendary coach but North Carolina is the better team. The fact that the Pack took down the Heels in the biggest game Yow has coached since her return is remarkable. It's spiritual. It would make for one hell of a Disney movie.

This is not the year that N.C. State makes a magical run to the Final Four and surprises everybody, this may prove to be the biggest win of the season for the Wolfpack. And that should be enough to consider the season a success.

All those "based on a true story" movies are tweaked a bit, so how about this for a hollywood story. Team loses coach to cancer. Team works harder instead of folding. Coach returns to sidelines. Team plays their best game of the season during the biggest matchup of the season and the coach celebrates with her team in that triumphant, slow-clap-inducing moment.

Life, you just can't make this stuff up.
