Duke at Maryland: Senior Night

By Jessica Garrison - February 18, 2007

Yes the No. 1 team in the nation, the only undefeated team in women's or men's basketball in Duke is in the building to take on the Terps, but first there is the beginning of a goodbye. Tonight is Senior Night for Shay Doron and Aurelie Noirez, Maryland coach Brenda Frese's very first recruiting class, and saying goodbye will be anything but easy.

The overwheming number of signs in the building are goodbyes and thank yous to standout guart Doron (though there is one "Merci Aurelie!!" in sight), and you get the feeling that though Maryland fans know they're losing a great, Shay's value may only be tryly understood next year. In many ways, she was the rudder of this team as they came back into national prominence. She is a clutch performer, a strong leader, an eloquent speaker and she, along with Aurelie, added an international element to the Terps' story. Just listen to the girls' stories about their trip to France or read about Shay's play overseas, you know there's something more that she brought to the team.

At very least, Doron's name will be in the record books for quite some time, as her 1,812 career points put her right behind Maryland's most famous woman, Vicky Bullett.
