Ahoy, Greensboro!

The Greensboro Coliseum is familiar territory for me, but I always look forward to coming back. As a cub reporter at Virginia. I came to two ACC women's tournaments here, and have since made a few repeat visits with CSTV. Coming down from New York, it always a couple of hours to get over the culture shock of how darn nice people are, and in my case I have to brace myself for a full round of "sweetie", "young lady" and "darlin'"s. I take is as local charm, but you'd never get away with that on the A train up North.

Greensboro has all but shut itself down for this tournament -- the five surrounding major roads are shut down to feed stadium traffic, the highway alerts up to 25 miles away give Coliseum directions, and security's tighter than what I faced this morning at LaGuardia. They do well to prepare for a crowd, I suppose, since Duke's home court is just an hour down I-40. I expect this crowd to look about like Hartford, insanely dominated by the local team's fans. Which begs the question: if you're a Duke fan and you make it to the Coliseum in time for the early game, who do you root for: Bowling Green or Arizona State? It was great to see the UConn fans pick up for Ole Miss and even for Green Bay in the opening round last weekend, so I'm interested to see which team they decide is a) the underdog and b) least dangerous to Duke's Final Four aspirations.

Now, I'm off to partake in the Coliseum's brilliant media buffet. Any place that has ice cream sandwiches for between-game snacks is A-OK with me!
