Austin: First Round Wrap-Up

By Jean Neuberger - March 18, 2007

Four games, two blowouts and one upset later, we've concluded the first round here in Austin's Erwin Center. Monday should provide some great excitment, as Oklahoma takes on Marquette, and West Virginia looks to avenge an earlier loss to LSU.

We saw eight teams today doing everything they can to stay alive, and that's the best part of March Madness. You know when it's tournament time that you aren't going to get an uninspired effort. It's win or go home, and in these four games, everyone did their best to stay the weekend in Austin. However, only four teams are sleeping in tomorrow, and will practice Sunday afternoon for a shot at the Sweet 16.

Having said that, it's time for tonight's awards.

She was 5-6 from 3-point range, leading the Tigers with 15 points and totally shutting down UNCA's Amanda Elder. A brilliant performance for LeBlanc tonight, especially when Sylvia Fowles was down.

TEAM OF THE DAY: Marquette
LSU was expected to win easy, OU was too but didn't, and WVU won in what was a pretty ugly game. Marquette was expected to beat La.-Lafayette, but not as badly as they did. Total domination from Krystal Ellis and the Golden Eagles.

Kept the crowd in it even during the blowout, and you had to laugh at the "Up by 40" chant.

MASCOT OF THE DAY: The Xavier blob
It's a's's totally not a Musketeer. But when it contracts to a ball and rolls on the court, it's awesome!

BIG TIME THANKS AWARD: Whoever kept the water bottles in stock.
I became Dasani's poster boy tonight...though they'll never know it because of those NCAA cups.

And with that, we bid you a good night from Austin, where tonight four teams continued their season, and became one step closer to Cleveland, the Final Four, and a national title.
