Austin: Marquette and UL(L) are underway

By Jean Neuberger - March 17, 2007

We've just started the second game, and Marquette has jumped out early on the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette. The Cajuns go by UL instead of ULL, which of course brings us to today's "The More Sports Trivia You Know" moment (insert educational music here).

LA-Lafayette is trying to become the official University of Louisiana, as there is no school in the state with that name. There was an actual U of L, and it was built in New Orleans in the mid 1800s, right before LSU was built in Baton Rouge. However, large donations by Paul Tulane changed the school to Tulane University, and it became a private college instead of a public, state-run school.

So, with that history, Lafayette decided to try and be the actual UL. However, the state legislature (and LSU fans) immediately objected to the idea. The compromise was to create the University of Louisiana System, which consists of nine in-state schools, but no flagship.

Nevertheless, LA-Lafayette keeps trying to get the Lafayette out of their name. Campus signs scream "UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA" with "Lafayette" in very small print below. Cheerleaders wear "UL" on their uniforms. The press box at Cajun Stadium reads "LOUISIANA", and the teams are known as "Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns", and not "UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns".

It's all Marquette early though over UL(L), as Crystal Ellis is totally wiping out the Cajun interior on both ends. The crowd, which seems to have more Golden Eagle fans, has been oohing and aahing at the play of Ellis, who has nine points in the first eight minutes. The Cajuns have to find a way to stop her quickly, or this one could get out of hand fast.

16-6 MU with 11:33 to go in the first half.
