Austin: OU Press Conference

By Jean Neuberger - March 17, 2007

The talk of the OU-SEMO game was centered on three things. One was Courtney Paris recording her 59th straight double-double (I was right...13 points, 11 boards), one was SEMO playing a competitive, tight game, and one was the outstanding play of OU point guard Jenna Plumley.

During the press conference, I asked Sooners Coach Sherri Coale if Plumley had played her best game ever, given that she had 20 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and only 2 turnovers in 40 full minutes of play.

"I don't know," said Coale. "She's been pretty good for us. But with this being her first NCAA Tournament game, she was absoutely huge for us."

Paris was relieved to get her double-double, but not for the expected reason.

"I'm just glad I got it because if I didn't, I'd have to answer a thousand questions about how it felt to not get it," she said to laughter from the press.

Oklahoma gave a lot of praise to SE Missouri State.

"They played tough," said Coale. "That's a very good basketball team they have."

"They're a tough, scrappy team," said Paris. "That was a dogfight inside all game. Lyles was just really scrappy and tough."

Fortunately, when SEMO collapsed around Paris, Plumley was open for the Sooners.

"I was fortunate to get open and Courtney, she knows how to find me," said Plumley. "We have that knack of knowing where each other is on the court, and she can find me every time."

SEMO played their hearts out, and much credit is to be given for their play. They worked hard on the glass, contained one of America's top players, and never let the Sooners blow them out. They left the court with their heads held high, as they should be. The RedHawks represented themselves very well today.

All in all, though, a tough but needed win for Oklahoma was earned.
