Austin: WVU Happy To Survive

By Jean Neuberger - March 17, 2007

Mike Carey didn't look thrilled about his team's upset of Xavier. Rather, he looked relieved, as if he'd just run a double marathon and still was able to move around with no trouble.

"I'm proud of our girls," Carey said. "I thought they struggled a little at the end, but they never stopped trying. Played great defense tonight, really stopped them on the offensive boards in the second half."

The stats of the game were not only rebounds (WVU 38-30), but West Virginia also forcing 19 Xavier turnovers and picking up an impressive 14 steals for the game, five of those coming from guard LaQuita Owens.

The Mountaineers have been to the Sweet 16 only once before. On Monday, they'll try to make it for a second time in their history.

Nevertheless, this was a huge win for the Mountaineers.

"We've never been to the second round," said Owens. "Our current team hasn't been there. This game meant a lot to us, and the next game will as well."

Looks like Cinderella is wearing a coonskin cap in Austin tonight.

We're near tipoff of LSU and UNC Asheville, as coverage of the NCAA Women's Tournament continues in Austin.
