Big XII: All Set for Iowa State - Kansas State

By Jean Neuberger - March 06, 2007

We now focus our attention to a much more filled Cox Convention Center, as the #5 Iowa State Cyclones take on #12 seed Kansas State. The arena is a lot more lively, thanks in part to the large number of ISU fans who have made this trip.

Here are some observations for today's showdown.

DARKHORSE vs. DISAPPOINTMENT - Last year, Kansas State won the WNIT, and weren't picked to be the cellar dwellars, but that's where they stand. Iowa State, however, has played inspired basketball this season, and tied for fourth in the Big XII, and sit nicely in Big Dance contention with a 22-7 mark.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: For K-State, no doubt it's Claire Coggins, their senior leader, who is similar to the Wildcats as to what Jackie McFarland is for Colorado. Iowa State is led by senior All-Big XII player Lyndsey Medders, along with rising stars Nicky Wieben and Toccara Ross, and a 3-point specialist in Megan Ronhovde.

BANDS: Kansas State is all decked in polos, while Iowa State's band looks like the bench of a professional hockey team...from their caps all the way down to their oversized jerseys.

FANS: No question here. I'd say Iowa State fans outnumber K-State's by a 8:1 margin, and that's being nice.

MASCOT: ISU's is decked head-to-toe, while K-State's wears a head...and has human legs. Big edge to the Cyclones.

We're underway here in Oklahoma City, as Iowa State and Kansas State fight to stay alive.
