Big XII: Conradt Wins 900th Game, Texas Advances

By Jean Neuberger - March 06, 2007

Finally, what was known to be the end result in the first half has arrived in the form of a 70-57 Texas win, the 900th victory in the long and successful career of head coach Jody Conradt. Missouri made a last desperate push to make the game interesting, but could get no closer than 13 points as the Longhorns were on cruise control for most of the second half.

There's not much to say about this game tonight that hasn't been said already. The faster, stronger, more talented team won the ball game. Missouri was simply outclassed tonight by the Longhorns.

Although Texas had the game won, the Longhorns didn't play an inspired second half. They were mostly sloppy, and seemed as if they just wanted the game to end and they could leave the arena. That left a sour taste in the mouths of most fans here, and it did with me as well. It's one thing to have a Missouri rally when you're playing your subs, but Texas had starters in the game at the very end. Texas won without having to play a full 40 minutes of basketball, but rest assured, they'll need to play 40 minutes of incredible basketball to beat Oklahoma tomorrow.

As for Missouri, it's back to the drawing board. I credit the Tigers for never quitting tonight. There were so many points in this game where Missouri could've folded and just decided it wasn't worth trying to fight back. However, the Tigers fought gallantly in the second half, trying all they could to cut into the Longhorn lead, even in the waning minutes with the game completely out of reach. That's a credit to Cindy Stein, and I give her credit for getting the technical as well. Sometimes, you have to stand up for your team, even if it costs you a couple of points.

So, with that, Missouri heads home, hoping for a potential WNIT bid, while Texas and Oklahoma meet tomorrow in the women's version of the Red River Shootout.

We're about 25 minutes away from the final game of tonight's session, featuring Oklahoma State and Kansas. Stay tuned to for continuing coverage of the 2007 Big XII Women's Tournament.
