Big XII: Day 2 Wrap-Up

By Jean Neuberger - March 08, 2007

We had three close, competitive games and a blowout on the first day of the 2007 Big XII Women's Tournament. Today, we had three blowouts, and one game that was not only close, it was a thriller of a game that people will be talking about for quite awhile.

We'll have a great pair of semifinal matchups, as we've got four teams that are really tough, really quick, and really aggressive. With this year's tournament almost ready to break the attendance records, the crowds coming for tomorrow's action will see some incredible basketball.

Now, for tonight's awards

You really had to be there. You had to see how intense and how tough and how gut-wrenching it was for both the Cyclones and Nebraska this afternoon. It was a gut check for Iowa State, and they passed with flying colors. Iowa State's going to be a tough draw for anyone in the NCAA Tournament, because they have great shooters and a whole lot of team speed. Add a lot of maturity and a lot of heart, and you've got the makings of a very dangerous program.

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Lyndsey Medders, Iowa State
There's three of us that have been sitting together at press row since the start of this tournament. When the topic of the best player of the day came up...the voice was unanimous and instant. Medders scored 27 points, hit the game-tying shot to send the game to overtime, sparked the Cyclone run in OT that won the game, and led the team from the start with her energy, maturity, and heart. She's got a spot locked up on my All-Tournament ballot, and she will be the player that Texas A&M must stop if they want to advance to the final.

FAN OF THE DAY: Sooner Man
There's a posting on here about him and all he does, but this guy is the epitome of what a fanatic is.

Rarely does someone repeat on the awards...but KU's band led 'em all in spirit, energy, chants, and songs. They're a terrific band to listen to. Texas A&M wins honorable mention.

He dances, he struts, he did everything but shoot the ball for the Jayhawks. Maybe he should've shot couldn't have hurt Kansas tonight.

And with that, we wrap up the second day of the Big XII Women's Tournament.

Stay tuned to and She's On Fire for continuing coverage. I'll be with the guys tomorrow morning, so check that out at's Hang Time, and then will return tomorrow evening for semifinal action at the Cox Convention Center. Until then, good night from Oklahoma City!
