Big XII: Dramatic Final Minute gives CU win

By Jean Neuberger - March 06, 2007

For a game that started out as ugly as it did, it ended in grand dramatic fashion, as Colorado held on for a huge 71-67 victory over Texas Tech.

With 37 seconds to go, Jackie McFarland, who I will now refer to as Miss Everything, found a wide open Whitney Houston on a beautifully designed cut to give the Buffs their first lead since 3:50 to go. As Tech called timeout, the CU band was shouting the fight song, trying to encourage their squad on.

Tech got the ball, and Myrick's shot fell short. CU's Susie Powers grabbed the rebound, and the CU fans and bench erupted in cheers, but the refs called Powers for traveling, giving Texas Tech the ball and another chance with 13 seconds to go.

Tech had two shots at a 3-pointer to win the game, but Jordan Murphree's shot bounced off the rim, and LaVonda Henderson's long prayer of a shot drew nothing but air.

Colorado advances to play Texas A&M, whose coach, Gary Blair, was sitting behind me the whole game.

More to come from Oklahoma City, as Colorado takes the opening game of the Big XII Women's Tournament.
