Big XII: The Skinny on OSU - Kansas

By Jean Neuberger - March 06, 2007

As we head into the fourth and final game in tonight's slate, let's take a look at the 6th-ranked OSU Cowgirls and the 11th seeded Kansas Jayhawks.

OSU wasn't picked to do big things, but Kurt Budke did a tremendous job in his debut season with the Cowgirls, guiding them to a 20-9 record, which was a remarkable turnaround from last season. The Cowgirls are led by Big XII Freshman of the Year Andrea Riley. At 5-5, she's by far the smallest player on the court, but as they say, dynamite comes in small packages, and for the Cowgirls, she's 100% dynamite. The other player to watch for OSU is Rashidat Sadiq, a 6-2 senior forward from Nigeria who has really performed well this season for the Cowgirls, giving them a much needed interior presence.

Kansas comes into this game with a 10-19 overall mark, and tied for last place in the Big XII with in-state rival Kansas State. However, an 82-74 win over the Wildcats in Lawrence allowed KU to clinch the 11th seed over KSU. They're led by Shaquina Mosley, a 5-6 guard, and by 5-9 freshman Kelly Kohn, who both average 10 points a game. Mosley was second team All-Big XII, while Kohn was an underrated freshman leader for the Jayhawks, and leads the team with a 35.6% from beyond the arc.

The two teams met once this year in Stillwater, with the Cowgirls winning 68-54. In that game, OSU never trailed, grabbed a 31-20 lead at the half and cruised to a relatively easy win. Riley led all scorers with 18 points, and three other Cowgirls finished in double digits. Kohn led Kansas with 12 points, and played an exhausting 37 minutes for the Jayhawks. For KU to win, they need to find ways to keep her rested, as she's the marksman they need to compete with Oklahoma State.

STAT TO WATCH: Fouls and free throws. In the last game they played, KU committed 25 fouls to OSU's 22. However, OSU shot 34 free throws, making 25 of them, while the Jayhawks only attempted 16, making just nine. That stat alone was the key difference in the game, especially when both teams made 21 field goals.

It should be a great way to end tonight's action in Oklahoma City, and we've got a pretty good crowd here tonight, made up of mostly orange-clad Cowgirl supporters who made the short drive down from Stillwater. We're about 5 minutes away from basketball, and this place is rocking, so we're ready to go!
