Big XII: Welcome to Day 2!

By Jean Neuberger - March 07, 2007

It's an incredibly beautiful day outside in Oklahoma City, as fans are just now filing into the Cox Convention Center to open Day 2 of the 2007 Big XII Women's Tournament.. Four highly anticipated games await us, and it should make for a fantastic day of hoops action!

Yesterday, basketball gluttons were treated to quite the feast, as three games went down to the last few minutes to decide their winners. We had the blowout win by Texas, which was #900 for Jody Conradt, and we have a tourney Cinderella in Kansas, who shocked Oklahoma State in front of what was easily the biggest crowd of the night.

Today, those who triumphed take on the top four teams in the conference. Colorado, led by Jackie "Miss Everything" McFarland, will have their hands full taking on a fired up top seed in Texas A&M. Iowa State, having won six games in a row, still feels they have work to do, and that workload for today is #4 Nebraska. The nightcap is highlighted by the women's version of the Red River Shootout, as #2 Oklahoma and #7 Texas do battle in what should be a boisterous setting. After the fireworks from that game die down, we end with the girls of the glass slipper, Kansas, taking on Kim Mulkey's third-seeded Baylor Lady Bears.

So what should we expect today?

I expect A&M to do everything but sell their kidneys to try and stop Jackie McFarland, meaning CU must find new scoring options in Jasmina Ilic and Kara Richards to have a chance to win this game. I expect ISU and Nebraska to be highly competitive. Both teams tied for fourth, but Nebraska got the nod as the higher seed, allowing them a bye. They'll be out to prove they deserved it, while there's no doubt Lyndsey Medders will be psyched for this one. As she said yesterday, they feel they have a lot to play for. I expect Texas and Oklahoma to be intense, and the atmosphere simply electrifying. However, Texas must play a full 40 minutes if they want a chance to shock the Sooners. No doubt Sherri Coale will have her team ready for this one, and the OU fans are savoring their shot at sending the 'Horns home early. And I expect to see another inspired effort from Kansas tonight. Will they pull off another upset? Anything's possible, as long as KU plays with reckless abandon. But if the Bears show up tonight, it will be a lot tougher than last night's win for the Jayhawks.

We're an hour away from tipoff between Colorado and Texas A&M, and the Aggies have taken the floor to the cheers of more elementary school students, who've come to watch the afternoon session (again, how cool is that?). So stay tuned to for Day 2 coverage of the Big XII Women's Tournament!
