Connecticut-Rutgers: Knighted Kings of the East

By Jeff Lippman - March 06, 2007

The 2007 Big East Tournament is coming to a close and with a minute remaining it is the No. 2 seed Rutgers with the four-point lead.

When was the last time No. 1 seed from the ACC, SEC and Big East all failed to win their conference championship?

I know that in the ACC this is the first time since 2000 that the No. 1 seed didn't win, so it must be a while back.

Both teams used extremely balanced scoring and good defense today, mixed with poor shooting.

It's Rutgers ball with less than a minute and UConn chooses to foul them. Essence Carson is at the line shooting the bonus.

Carson hits on her first...hits the second to give the Knights a six point lead.

Ketia Swanier's jumper is missed with 31.4 seconds left and Rutgers gets the board and goes to the line.

Carson is back on the line to try to ice it for Rutgers. She hits the first, a seven point lead. Eight points with 31.4 seconds would just about finish UConn off....and she hits it!

Montgomery airballs a three but it is rebounded and put back by Charde Houston. With 18.9 left the score is Rutgers 53-47.

Rutgers fails to inbound, ball goes back to UConn.

Montgomery airballs another three-pointer. Charde Houston fouls out as Matee Ajavon goes to the line.

This one is all over but the crying and Geno Auriemma will be doing some crying. He only has his team to blame, they didn't come out with the same fire and intensity that the crowd saw yesterday.

An Epiphanny Prince block later, and this one is over. The final score is 55-47 Rutgers, your 2007 Big East Tournament Champions!!
