Dallas: The Agony of Defeat

By Jean Neuberger - March 28, 2007

It was a tough night for #2 Purdue, but for Coach Sharon Versyp, and seniors Erin Lawless and Katie Gearlds, life will go on....tomorrow.

"To get to the final eight is very special for this group," said Versyp. "Having a whole new coaching staff come in and the changes that had to be made. But I've never been so proud of a group of young women, what they've accomplished, and it's just setting new footprints in the Purdue program."

The keys of the game were the Purdue turnovers (21), and UNC's dominance in the paint (54-28), and Versyp noted the factors that ended the Boilermaker season.

"Our first half turnovers were not very good," Versyp said. "North Carolina tried to get that fast paced game. The first half we went zone and did some pretty good things, but then they started getting deep and we were getting ourselves too spread out."

"They're a fantastic team down low in the post," added Lawless.

An emotional Gearlds was clearly devestated in defeat.

"I left it all out there," said Gearlds. "But I didn't do enough for our team to win, and it hurts. There's not 11 other people in this world that I would rather go to war with."

Purdue managed to close the Tar Heel gap to four, but Carolina always had an answer, and it finished two remarkable careers for Gearlds and Lawless.

"It has been an honor to wear Purdue across my chest, and I'll savor every good moment, every bad moment," said Gearlds. "There's definitely been a lot of good moments and I'll never forget a minute I played here at Purdue."

"It's been a fantastic four years, and as much as this hurts right now, you look back and it's just been a fantastic ride with all the championships we've won," said Lawless. "I'll look back on all the happy times, and as much as this is going to hurt I'll always want to remember the great times here at Purdue."
