Duke-Virginia: Big Shocker

By Jeff Lippman - March 02, 2007

What a big surprise. Nobody could have expected this. Duke won by 21? How'd that happen?

I think everyone in the building was expecting a better showing from the Cavaliers, who looked so solid in their game yesterday. But, alas, they were playing the No. 1 undefeated Blue Devils and Duke is Duke.

The Lady Devils were led by Abby Waner's 24 points--although she only managed seven after the break, Duke didn't need it. Waner hit six 3-pointers and pulled down six rebounds.

Alison Bales had an OK offensive night, scoring 13 points, but it was her defense of UVa's Lyndra Littles, who finished with only seven points on 2-of-14 shooting, that made the night for the Devils. Bales, the nation's best shot blocker, kicked six Cavalier shots.

Duke didn't really play great. They played solid and they played good enough to dominate Virginia, but this wasn't the Devils at their best by any stretch.

But, like always, the Duke defense was devastating, holding Virginia to 30 percent shooting and forcing 17 turnovers.

The win raises Duke's win total to an even 30-0 on the year and the UVa loss ensures their season is done.

Tommorow in the semifinals, Duke will take on the 4-seed N.C. State in the first game of the day.

Game Notes:

- The 24 points Abby Waner scored breaks her career high in an ACC tournament game. Her previous high was just seven, which she eclipsed less than eight minutes into the game.

- Waner broke the Duke record for most three pointers in a tournament game with six. The previous record was five, which Waner had by halftime.

- Alison Bales' six blocked shots ties her for the all-time single game ACC Tournament record. Needless to say it is a Duke tournament record. In fact, her six blocks are more than any Blue Devil has put up for an entire tournament.
