Gainesville Dancing the Hokey Pokey?

By Jeff Lippman - March 07, 2007

As the news circulates that LSU coach Pokey Chatman has resigned from her position at the Baton Rouge school, one has to wonder as to why a young, energetic coach still at the beginnings of what promises to be an excellent career would leave a team with as much promise as the Tigers.

Watching junior Sylvia Fowles' progression into a senior leader next year would be reason enough to stay with the program who recently upset mighty Tennessee in the SEC semifinals.

"I have notified the University today that I will step down as head coach of the women's basketball program in order to allow me to pursue other career opportunities." Chatman said at her press conference.

How many other opportunities out there could be better than coaching a team that has spent the large part of the last few years in the Top 10?

How about the chance to become the next and most recent mayor of Titletown?

The Florida Gators are national champions in football and in men's basketball. A few years back they made a commitment to their women's basketball program by going out and signing a national championship winner in Carolyn Peck. Just four years later, that experiment failed, but the Gators aren't resigned to having a mediocre women's team. They want another national champion.

And the Gators certainly have the resources and the brand new state-of-the-art facilities and the recruiting tools to get the job done. They just need another high profile coach who can make it happen.

Are you starting to see what Chatman might be seeing?

Now, I'm not saying that Chatman is the next coach of Florida. I'm not even saying that this is even a rumor at this point. But what I am saying is, think about it, it makes sense, doesn't it?

This is more than a rumor at this point. This has been talked about so much in the women's basketball community...that if it isn't true than it's a big disappointment.
