Green and Purple?

By Jeff Lippman - March 01, 2007

Greetings from the ACC Tournament--finally.

Although I couldn't get from Oklahoma to Greensboro before the opening game ended, I'm told it was a riveting matchup, much closer than the 70-53 score would indicate, as Florida State virtually woman-handled Wake Forest.

The Seminoles will next face four seed N.C. State.

So, Greensboro is a lovely city. So beautiful, in fact, that I'd estimate that just over 30 percent of the stores, restaurants and businesses I passed on the road leading up to Greensboro Coliseum were long past their expiration dates and boarded up.

Oh, if you are wondering about the title to this entry...As I sit here center court waiting for the second game of the day--Virginia vs. Clemson--I am silently thinking to myself (and then voicing it in this blog), why in the world is everything in the Greensboro Coliseum decorated in pastel greens and purples?

Right now Clemson and Virginia are conducting their pre-game shootarounds, complete with dribble drills and the like. The Cavs are practicing their spot-up jumpers.

This is the eight vs. nine game so it should follow that it's the most competitive of the first day of action. And after the opener, it should at least be the most competitive thus far.

Neither team had much of an inspiring regular season. The Lady Cavs are the No. 8, finishing with a 16-13 overall record, 5-9 in conference. The Tigers finished the season 12-17 and went just 4-10 in conference.

These two teams met in the final game of the regular season with Virginia pulling out an exciting 86-85 win at Littlejohn.

I just don't know why, but somehow I feel that UVA and Clemson's best effort will go largely unrewarded, as--and, call me crazy--I don't think they have much shot at beating Duke in the next round. But, hey, anything can happen right?

Seriously, I'm not crazy. Really.
