Marist-Tenn: Lady Vols Elite

By Jeff Lippman - March 25, 2007

There were times this afternoon when it almost looked like Tennessee was toying with its small-town opponent.

Like a dog pawing at its prey, waiting to see if there will be any movement before he ultimately devours it whole, so did Tennessee wait to see if Marist would make a run.

They did not and were devoured by the Lady Vols, 65-46.

It's not that Marist played bad, no, judging by their early-season games against Maryland and Duke this is what we should have expected from this game.

The underdog card can only get you so far before you need the talent to back it up.

Tennessee came out firing today, something that Ohio State and Middle Tennessee might not have done in their games against the Red Foxes.

The Lady Vols are just much better than Marist, and I don't think one player from the Red Foxes, or their coach Brian Giorgis, would disagree with that.

But that doesn't excuse that blasted song "Rocky Top" that the Tennessee band insists on playing every 30 seconds!

All that is left for Tennessee is the wait to see if they will be meeting Oklahoma or Ole Miss for a shot at the Final Four just down the road in Cleveland.

For Marist, the Cinderella will be put to bed, one win shy of 30 for the season. And what a magical season it turned out to be for the girls from Poughkeepsie. They have nothing to hang their heads about.

After the game Meg Dahlman, who led the Red Foxes in scoring with 16 to tie Parker for game-high honors, and Parker exchanged an embrace, initiated by Parker to let Dahlman know she played a good game.

With the players walking off the court, the Marist fans began a chant of, "We'll be back," and with some solid players coming next season, this might not be the last we hear of the Red Foxes.
