Okla-Ole Miss: Rebel Yell

By Jeff Lippman - March 25, 2007

After 20 minutes of high flying action, enough cannot be said of Mississippi's team defense.

Ashley Awkward, Armintie Price, Alliesha Easley and Shantell Black are everywhere, getting their hands on every single ball. They pull back, flip a switch, and then they hit another gear.

The Rebels might as well be nicknamed the thiefs, as they've stolen the ball 11 times en route to forcing 15 first-half turnovers for Oklahoma.

When the Sooners can get the ball inside to Courtney Paris, they are usually able to score, but the Rebels have been denying her the ball with gusto.

So much talk has been made of our first game star Candace Parker and Oklahoma's Paris, but the best player I've seen on the court today has easily been Armintie Price.

Price is doing it all for the Rebels, literally. She went 7-for-11 in the first half, with 19 points, six rebounds, three steals, two assists, a big three pointer and drive after drive in the lane as Ole Miss leads No. 3 Oklahoma at the half, 41-36.

Awkward has eight points for Ole Miss.

Oklahoma would be even worse off if not for the contributions of seniors Chelsi Welch and Leah Rush, who scored seven apiece including three big threes between them. Paris finished the half with 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting and seven boards, well on her way to recording her 61st consecutive double double.
