VT-BC: What's in a Name?

By Jeff Lippman - March 01, 2007

Dunkenberger? Is that even Inglese?

For those that are completely lost with what I just wrote, let me clarify.

The third contest in this 2007 ACC Tournament pits the Virginia Tech Hokies, coached by Beth Dunkenberger, against the Boston College Eagles, who are led by Cathy Inglese. Make sense? Still no? Well, then I can't help you.

Who would win in a fight? A giant maroon turkey or a very handsome, but also maroon Eagle? You have to take into consideration, of course, that a Hokie is nothing close to a Turkey at all, just a word for the good residents of Blacksburg.

Anyway, so there actually is a game going on right now. Virginia Tech is leading Boston College 26-24 at the half.

Yeah, looks like we've got a real high-scoring affair on our hands. They might even make it to 50!

Leading the way for VT is Nare "If it sounds like I'm from Mali it's because I am" Diawara. The 6-foot-6 senior center has eight first-half points to go with three boards. She did all her damage from the charity stripe where she went 6-for-7.

Freshman guard Mickel Picco has seven points and four boards to lead BC in both categories. Picco, however, is only shooting 2-for-7 from the floor.

And just to note, former American Idol contestant Ayla Brown who is the starting forward for the Eagles has struggled in the early going, scoring zero points on zero shots to go with two fouls.
