LSU-Rutgers: Tar Heels and Vols Beware

By Jeff Lippman - April 01, 2007

This Rutgers team came to Cleveland for one reason and one reason only: To win a National Championship.

And the way they are playing tonight, that is looking like a more distinct possibility with each reigned three that falls.

Between Essence Carson and Matee Ajavon, the Knights finished the half 8-for-10 from long range with Carson dropping 15 points to lead all scorers and Ajavon adding 14 on 4-for-4 from deep.

Hoops Odyssey's Jake Osterhout put it best when he glanced up to see Ajavon drain another three and asked, "Who are these girls?"

To which some fans in the stands responded, "We are! Rutgers!"

Any way you want to look at it, LSU is going to need an incredible comeback in the second half if they want to advance. Rutgers holds a 37-19 advantage and with the way they are playing--which is to say dominating in every aspect--it doesn't look to me like the Tigers can hang.

I've said it time and again. Every time I see this Rutgers team they show me something better than the last time. And that is the sign of a great young team coming into its own. They learn from every game and only get better.

Even with Wild Thing Vaughn playing the bench position with two fouls for most of the half, it didn't matter. Rutgers is lights out and light speed ahead to the National Championship.
