They Goin' Moscow

While the news that the USA women's basketball program has chipped their Under-21 roster down to its final 12 participants is slightly old hat, chances are many of the readers of this blog have yet to hear about it. So here it goes.

The final roster that will travel to Moscow, Russia to play in the World Championships on June 29-July 8, consists of 12 stellar athletes.

They are: Oklahoma's Courtney Paris, Jolene Anderson of Wisconsin, DeWanna Bonner of Auburn, Rutgers' Essence Carson and Kia Vaughn, Maryland's Laura Harper and Crystal Langhorne, Ashley Houts of Georgia, Marscilla Packer from Ohio State, Abby Waner of Duke, Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton of Purdue and last but not least, Stanford's three-time All-American Candice Wiggins.

If you notice, incoming Northwestern freshman, Amy Jaeschke, who was selected to try out for the U21 team despite being barely 18 years of age, failed to make the final roster. No doubt that she will stick with the U19 team and the experience she gained in her short time with her elders has been priceless.

After their first game, a battle with the French National Team, the U21's looked rather impressive, defeating their wine and cheese-loving opponents 82-59 on the heels of a 31-7 third period.

Leading the way for the US was Stanford's Wiggins who notched 16 points and Rutgers' Vaughn who netted 14. DeWanna Bonner added 12 points and Scarlet Knight Essence Carson scored 10. Maryland's Crystal Langhorne and OSU's Marscilla Packer added seven points apiece.

After this first game I think it is safe to assume that there won't be too many more box scores that don't have Courtney Paris in the leading scorer column. The most dominant big in the women's game will surely dominate international competition, and with Vaughn and Langhorne banging down low as well, this team doesn't have any weakness inside.

With Waner and Wiggins, they don't have too much weakness on the perimeter, either.
