Boiled Over

By Jeff Lippman - August 22, 2007

It hasn't been a smooth offseason for the Purdue Lady Boilermakers.

First they lose All-American Katie Gearlds to graduation. Then the injury bug hits their best remaining player Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton, who tore her ACL and is out for the season.

And now, The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions has placed the West Lafayette school on two years probation and will take away two scholarships from the women's basketball program for violations.

A former assistant coach at Purdue, Katrina Merriweather, and former backup point guard Cherelle George, had been involved in charges of committing academic fraud and unethical conduct, a very serious charge as far as the NCAA is concerned.

For Purdue's immediate future, this shouldn't take too much of a toll on the team, as the Boilermakers will still be allowed to play on television and in the postseason should they get so far.

The true punishment comes in the future, when a team that is generally one of the better Big Ten schools will be forced to recruit with two less scholarships available.

I couldn't agree more. Great thoughts as usual Mr. Lippman.
