Baby Boom?

By Jeff Lippman - September 16, 2007

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

I realize that isn't much of lead, but if you are reading this sentence, that one did its job. And its purpose is to inform the reader that what I'm about to write should be taken very lightly and isn't in any way a realistic prediction of the future.

With that said, it was announced this week that an NCAA Division I panel has proposed a rule that would forbid schools from cutting athlete's scholarships for any injury or medical condition, including pregnancy.

The question I would like to pose is, will the lifting of the threat of taking away a scholarship, translate into a baby boom of sorts among female college athletes?

It sounds silly, I know. But think about it for a second.

I am not in any way suggesting that this proposal, if passed, will cause female student-athletes to go out and get pregnant at alarming rates just because they wouldn't lose their scholarship.

But what I am thinking is that, maybe in the small population of cases where a married athlete wants to have children but does not for fear of losing her scholarship, maybe that athlete would be more apt to follow through with the pregnancy in this situation.

And again, this proposal would in no way mean that all of a sudden your favorite women's college basketball players will be missing seasons due to pregnancies left and right, but that it could happen more freely than it does now.

But I must firmly say that no matter what, I do not feel this proposal is a negative. Not in any way. In fact, I think it is a great idea because it covers athlete's injuries that are not under their control. And I don't think you penalize a student-athlete of their education simply because they got hurt and cannot perform on the field. They deserve to finish out their college education.
