Best of the Best

There is a team out there with the firepower and talent to take out Maryland, beat back Connecticut and dismantle the national champion Tennessee Lady Vols.

Let me just clarify that this team is made of women and it will have the opportunity to showcase its talents against the likes of the top college teams across the country. I'm speaking, of course, about the USA Women's National Team.

The national team, made up of WNBA All-Stars like Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi and Swin Cash to name a few, will play an 8-game exhibition schedule against the country's top college programs beginning with Maryland in College Park on Oct. 31.

Team USA will follow their meeting with the Terrapins with a Nov. 2 date with Connecticut, Nov. 4 at Tennessee, Nov. 6 at Baylor, Nov. 8 at Arizona State, Nov. 11 at Texas A&M and a California swing that includes games against USC and Stanford.

The U.S. is preparing for the FIBA Americas Championship, while the college teams will use the tough exhibition matchups to becoming tougher as the season lurks.

In what is truly great experience for the collegiate players, teams like Maryland and Tennessee will use this game to see where they stack up against the best competition in the nation.

And don't think I am expecting blow outs in some of these games. The Terrapins, Huskies and Lady Vols have more than enough firepower to compete with Team USA, including perhaps the best player on the court in Candace Parker for the Vols.

While I do expect team USA's experience to win out, these will be closer games than some might think. The collegiate teams have one thing in their corner that that Team USA does not. Unity. And many times, especially for an assembled all-star team, unity is the one thing missing.
