USA's Future

By Jeff Lippman - September 09, 2007

Candice Wiggins has been added to the pool of players in camp for the United States National Team that is is training from Sept. 9-12 at John Jay College in New York.

Joining Wiggins is Oklahoma's Courtney Paris, Tennessee's Candace Parker and LSU's Sylvia Fowles as the only players still playing basketball collegiately.

They'll be competing amongst 27 of the nation's top players to make the final roster for the FIBA Americas Championship For Women that will be played from Sept. 26-30 in Valdivia, Chile. The winner of that tournament automatically qualifies for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

Wiggins, Paris, Parker and Fowles represent the future of USA basketball for the United States and they know it, that is why they have been invited to the camp. Because their own college teams will be beginning to meet shortly, if they haven't already, these players know their time with the National Team is short. They will most likely not make the final roster going to Chile.

Imagine a lineup with those four in it. That's pretty sick, if you ask me. I think I would be confident to send those four players to Chile, maybe throw in Abby Waner for three-point purposes, that they would bring back the gold and the Olympic nod.

But that is the supreme state of USA women's basketball. Light years ahead of the rest of the world and only getting stronger.
